Predicting promising college majors in China has proven highly difficult over the past 30 years due to rapid societal transformations and technological changes. Historical trends show that popular majors are cyclical and rarely maintain their high status; for example, the popularity of biology in the late 20th century, computer science in the early 2000s, and finance during market peaks often led to subsequent saturation or misaligned career expectations. Standard guidelines are hard to establish, especially with current AI developments rapidly restructuring employment fields.

Career outcomes depend heavily on geographic location rather than the specific major studied. Choosing a university in a first-tier city or a developed coastal area acts as a crucial growth opportunity, providing students with diverse perspectives and a broader framework of understanding. Research and anecdotal cases suggest that graduates who study and live within restricted spatial boundaries, such as a radius of less than 1 kilometer (1 km), suffer from limited mindsets. In contrast, relocation to major cities like Beijing or Shanghai enhances adaptability and general cognitive capacity, which are more valued by employers than strict alignment with academic disciplines.

Individual personality, adaptability, and lifelong learning habits ultimately dictate long-term success more than academic training. In the current "soft-class" society, upward social mobility has decreased while downward risks have increased, meaning a prestigious major no longer guarantees stable employment. Standard educational paths require supplementary long-term vision, spanning 4, 10, or 15 years, to position individuals successfully. Ultimately, selecting a major based on personal interest combined with a growth-conducive city remains the optimal strategy for navigating these modern economic shifts.
