Debasish Patnaik, a senior partner at McKinsey & Co., pointed out that artificial intelligence is now providing mass-affluent clients with services close to private-banking quality, which diminishes the value of traditional financial advisers who offer standardized advice.

As artificial intelligence increasingly takes over standardized advisory services, clients with liquid assets between $100,000 and $1,000,000 may soon be managed by AI, forcing human wealth managers to focus on the emotional needs of the truly wealthy. (Key numbers: 10, 100)

Although the deployment of artificial intelligence is expected to boost productivity, it is also driving new hiring needs, with Citigroup Inc. planning to recruit hundreds of employees for its private banking and wealth management business.
