Panini SpA, the Italian publisher behind the iconic World Cup sticker albums since 1970, is embroiled in a fierce licensing battle with US sports merchandising giant Fanatics Inc. Fanatics has secured exclusive rights to FIFA World Cup collectibles from 2031 onward, effectively barring Panini from producing sticker books featuring tournament teams or players. Following the death of longtime CEO Aldo Sallustro, Panini has yet to articulate a clear counter-strategy against its American rival.

The 2030 World Cup, hosted across Morocco, Portugal, and Spain, will feature the final Panini sticker album, raising fears among fans worldwide that decades-old collecting rituals will come to an end. For generations, tearing open sticker packs, trading duplicates at school, and pasting players into albums have been cherished traditions tied to each tournament. In Mexico City, thousands of collectors gather at the Palacio de Bellas Artes to swap stickers — a community event that has grown from a small gathering into a massive fan tradition over the decades.

The economics of sticker collecting have shifted dramatically over the years. In 1990, a pack cost roughly 20 US cents and completing an album required less than $50; today, packs of seven stickers sell for about $2, and with the tournament expanding to 48 teams and 980 stickers needed, most collectors spend between $600 and $900. The Panini company was founded in 1961 in Modena, Italy, starting from the family's newsstand before obtaining its breakthrough FIFA license in 1970. Although the founding family sold the company in 1988, they remain proud of the brand's enduring legacy and express regret that the Panini name may eventually disappear from World Cup albums.
