6G mobile networks are expected to be globally deployed around 2030, continuing the roughly 10-year upgrade cycle of cellular technology. The standards will be defined by the ITU-R as IMT-2030, following IMT-2020 for 5G, IMT-2010 for 4G, and IMT-2000 for 3G. Current 5G networks typically deliver about 100 to 200 Mbps download speeds but have weaker uplink capacity, making symmetrical upload and download speeds a major goal of 6G, alongside higher-frequency terahertz spectrum usage and increased device capacity per cell tower.

Shifting demand is driving the technological focus. Remote work, videoconferencing, and AI processing require large volumes of raw data to be uploaded to cloud systems, including security footage and generative AI media processing. To reduce latency and data center load, 6G networks may introduce regional “AI nodes” using edge computing so requests are processed locally rather than in distant centralized data centers. At the same time, the network is expected to support a growing ecosystem of connected devices such as smart glasses, smartwatches, AI wearables, and earbuds.

Another major feature is joint communications and sensing (JCAS), allowing the network to function similarly to radar by detecting objects, vehicles, or drones through reflected high-frequency signals and estimating their location, shape, speed, and material properties. The 6G infrastructure may also expand fixed wireless access and satellite integration to improve coverage and efficiency. Although the technology remains in early development, industry planners expect it to coexist with existing 4G and 5G networks while emphasizing practical applications after lessons from the marketing hype surrounding previous generations.
