Japanese PC makers are preparing price hikes as memory chip costs surge, driven by an industry pivot toward higher-margin AI-server components. MouseComputer paused online sales from Dec. 23 to Jan. 4 after announcing January increases, citing demand that exceeded expectations. Dynabook says DRAM hikes have outpaced internal cost-cutting and is weighing higher prices.

Memory is a large share of PC costs: DRAM and NAND-based SSDs are about 30% of a finished PC, and yen weakness adds pressure for Japanese brands. Spot DDR4 8Gb DRAM is about $14.10, up 886% from end-2024; Oct–Dec contract prices rose ~80% vs Jul–Sep. Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron control ~90% of DRAM and are shifting capacity to high-bandwidth memory, scaling back DDR4.

NAND is rising too: Oct–Dec bulk TLC NAND is about $46.60 (256GB) and $87.40 (512GB), roughly 40% higher than Jul–Sep. Major suppliers are prioritizing data-center profitability, tightening PC supply, while global giants (Lenovo, HP, Dell) hold ~60% of the Q3 PC market, making their pricing moves pivotal. Analysts expect sustained PC price hikes of 10%–20%, with spillovers to products like iPhones.
