OpenAI last year pitched a plan for companies such as Spotify Technology SA and Booking Holdings Inc. to ship mini-apps inside ChatGPT, aiming to turn the chatbot into an App Store-like all-in-one platform; six months later, app makers describe a slow start: despite 300+ integrations, they are hard to find, partners have constrained functionality to avoid ceding customer relationships and payments, and developers cite a tedious approval process, buggy tooling, and limited usage data.

The sluggish rollout adds to other product recalibrations: OpenAI said it will discontinue the Sora video generator and is working to fold its nascent Atlas browser into a single desktop app with its chatbot and coding tools, streamlining ahead of a possible IPO later this year. The strategy also intersects with an expanding rivalry with Apple, which in November introduced a “mini apps” policy requiring super apps to hand over a 15% cut of in-app purchases, while OpenAI pursues device integration via work with ex-Apple executive Jony Ive after acquiring his hardware startup for nearly US$6.5 billion.

Quantitative signals suggest the “floodgates” are still closed: a Criteo report this month found 55% of 6,000+ global consumers are extra cautious about sharing payment information with AI, and 96% of regular AI-chatbot users still rely on other channels (social media, traditional search, and retailer sites) along the path to purchase. Companies similarly report small referral traffic from ChatGPT and far larger ad spending with Google; on the supply side, OpenAI approved nearly 70 apps last week versus roughly 3–5 per day previously, but developers say analytics remain “very limited” because prompts are treated as private data, and ongoing bugs and unannounced changes make performance and reliability hard to assess.
