OpenAI is reshaping its leadership again as it tries to merge ChatGPT, Codex, and its developer API into a single product experience. Greg Brockman, the cofounder and president, is now officially in charge of product strategy in addition to AI infrastructure, after previously handling product oversight on an interim basis while Fidji Simo, the CEO of AGI deployment, was on medical leave. Brockman told staff the company is consolidating product efforts to focus on an agentic future and to compete across consumer and enterprise markets.
The reorganization also gives other leaders broader responsibilities. Thibault Sottiaux, head of Codex, will lead the core product and platform teams and is also helping oversee OpenAI’s forthcoming super app, which is intended to combine Codex, ChatGPT, and the Atlas web browser into one desktop application. Nick Turley, who led ChatGPT from launch and helped grow it to more than 900 million weekly active users, is moving to enterprise products and will no longer work on consumer products, while Ashley Alexander, previously a VP at Instagram and more recently leading health products, will now run the consumer product unit.
The changes come as OpenAI faces stronger competition from Anthropic in coding and Google in consumer chatbots, and as it prepares for a possible IPO later this year. OpenAI says Codex is increasingly powering both consumer and enterprise tools that can perform digital tasks autonomously for users, which is part of why the company is narrowing its focus around a few key areas. The latest shake-up follows other recent departures, including Kevin Weil, Bill Peebles, and Srinivas Narayanan, and reflects a broader push to simplify the company before a public filing.
