South Korea will allow the won to be traded 24 hours a day for the first time starting July 6, 2026, in an effort to boost its global financial presence and secure an upgrade to developed-market status from MSCI Inc.
However, this transition comes at a delicate time as the won has plunged to a 17-year low of around 1,540 per dollar. Despite a booming domestic economy and record exports, massive capital outflows from overseas investments have weakened the currency, leaving it more vulnerable to speculation and volatility.
In preparation for the 24-hour trading window, major banks are expanding their dealing teams and securing offshore licenses. This shift represents a significant departure for South Korea, which has tightly controlled its currency since the 1997 Asian financial crisis, moving toward a more open and accessible market framework.
