According to a new study by climate risk modeling firm First Street, severe convective storms (SCS)—such as tornadoes, hail, and powerful winds—now pose a greater threat to homeowners than hurricanes and floods. In 2025, insurance payouts from these storms surpassed those from cyclones, making them the costliest insured natural disasters globally. First Street chief economist Jeremy Porter noted that such events have become a top priority for insurance companies and asset owners.

The financial toll of these intense convective storms is substantial, with global insurance payouts over the past 25 years totaling 794 billion dollars. According to First Street, which based its findings on data from risk management consulting firm Aon, this 794 billion dollar figure exceeds the combined global losses from flooding, earthquakes, and droughts over the same period.

In 2025, severe convective storms generated one-third of all global economic losses related to natural disasters. Total insured and uninsured financial losses from these storms reached 82 billion dollars, which was more than any other natural disaster category. Of these massive global losses, 68 billion dollars were heavily concentrated within the United States, representing a highly disproportionate share of the economic impact.
