The Australian government is planning to build a A$94 billion high-speed rail network to address the housing affordability crisis and soaring property prices in Sydney. The project's first stage is a 194-kilometer line between Sydney and Newcastle, which is expected to reduce travel time to 60 minutes, and create 160,000 new homes and 99,000 jobs.

Although building a high-speed rail network in Australia has been dismissed for decades as a financially flawed fantasy, and faces cautionary tales of cost overruns and delays from overseas projects like the UK's HS2 and California's bullet train, the current plan has received unprecedented political and financial backing. The new High Speed Rail Authority has been allocated a A$462 million preparatory budget, led by Tim Parker, who has extensive experience in mega-projects.

The ultimate vision is to connect Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, and Melbourne with bullet trains traveling up to 320 kilometers per hour by 2060, covering 1,800 kilometers of Australia's east coast. The authority estimates that the completed network will boost the Australian economy by A$1.7 trillion by 2086, while transforming travel patterns and lifestyles along the country's most densely populated corridor.
