Iranian missile and drone attacks on the UAE are undermining the core narrative of Dubai and Abu Dhabi as stable financial safe havens. Hiring has already reacted in real time: recruiter Ashwin Anil said about half of candidates considering a move to Dubai have started to hesitate, and some have withdrawn entirely. The trade-off is now explicit: Abu Dhabi has about $2 trillion in sovereign wealth, while Dubai offers deep private capital and a low-tax environment, but those advantages are being repriced against geographic exposure.

The pressure has spread into finance, asset management, and infrastructure. The number of hedge fund firms in Dubai’s financial center has more than doubled since early 2024 to over 100, yet that growth depends heavily on mobile trading talent. Some large investors are maintaining long-term commitments: Brookfield said its $20 billion AI infrastructure venture with Qatar’s sovereign fund is unaffected, and KKR said it has invested $2 billion in the region over the past year. By contrast, Amazon said drone strikes damaged three Middle East data centers, including two in the UAE, prompting advice that critical data should be backed up outside the region.

The shock is also visible in migration, travel, and asset prices. Dubai property values have risen more than 70% since 2019 and the city became a global leader in homes sold for more than $10 million, yet some wealthy buyers are now pausing off-plan purchases. John Mason International Movers estimates that about 240,000 British expats live in the UAE. Airspace closures left carriers such as Emirates operating only a few evacuation flights, while markets moved first: Emaar and Abu Dhabi’s Aldar each fell 10% in the two sessions after trading resumed. The overall signal is that if the conflict lasts, the UAE’s resilience will face a more direct stress test than in past crises.
