Since large-scale mining began in the mid-19th century, nickel has maintained a consistent premium over copper, historically averaging roughly 2.85 times the price of copper. However, this long-standing dynamic is now on the verge of breaking down. Recently, the nickel-to-copper premium slumped to a record low of around 1.17 times, and at the mine gate, prices have effectively inverted, with typical copper producers earning more per ton of contained metal than Indonesian nickel miners.
This historic price divergence is largely driven by stark contrasts in mining geology and processing dynamics. Innovative extraction techniques in Indonesia have unlocked vast, low-cost reserves of surface nickel laterites, creating a massive supply boom; conversely, copper has seen declining ore grades and minimal new discoveries as miners focus on mergers and acquisitions. Concurrently, intense competition for scarce copper concentrate has driven treatment and refining charges deep into negative territory as smelters profit from high-priced byproducts like precious metals and sulfuric acid, driving copper miners' net returns higher than those of nickel.
Looking forward, copper demand appears exceptionally bullish as the global transition into the 'Age of Electricity' intensifies needs across renewable power, data centers, and grid infrastructure. In contrast, nickel faces a more uncertain outlook, particularly as nickel-intensive electric vehicle batteries lose ground to advanced Chinese lithium iron phosphate cells. Much like aluminum transformed from an ultra-expensive metal into an everyday commodity in the 19th century, nickel may be entering a lasting structural shift rather than experiencing a temporary anomaly.
