The internet sector, which once drove enthusiasm for offshore Chinese equities, is losing its growth momentum. Major companies like Alibaba and Tencent reported quarterly revenues that fell short of estimates due to heavy investments in artificial intelligence, intense domestic competition, and weak consumer sentiment.
The MSCI China Index dropped as much as 2.1% on Thursday, declining more than 20% from its October 2 high at one point. Alibaba and Tencent were the biggest drags on the gauge during the day, while the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index also slid 2.1%.
