US companies announced the largest number of job cuts for any January since the depths of the Great Recession in 2009, according to data from outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. Companies announced 108,435 job cuts last month, a 118% increase from a year earlier.
The same Thursday report showed hiring intentions slid 13% from a year earlier to 5,306, the weakest total for any January in the firm’s records back to 2009. Chief revenue officer Andy Challenger said the first quarter usually brings high job cuts, but this January total is unusually high, and most plans were set at the end of 2025, signaling employers are less-than-optimistic about the outlook for 2026. The top three reasons for announced job cuts in January were contract loss, economic conditions, and restructuring.
Almost half of January’s announced job cuts were tied to three companies: Amazon.com Inc., United Parcel Service Inc., and Dow Inc.; Amazon planned 16,000 corporate cuts, UPS said up to 30,000, and chemical maker Dow about 4,500, totaling 50,500 or about 46.6% of 108,435. Peloton Interactive Inc. and Nike Inc. also announced workforce reductions. The figures add to signs of a fragile labor market with limited overall dismissals but lackluster hiring that has unnerved consumers, while Federal Reserve policymakers say the unemployment rate shows “some signs of stabilization.”
