The annual Border Security Expo in Phoenix showed that immigration enforcement is becoming a rapidly expanding market: the US Congress has approved roughly $170bn in cumulative additional immigration-enforcement funding through 2029, and the European Union is also raising spending. As countries simplify procurement rules and run pilot programmes, startups are being drawn into a field once dominated by large defence contractors and security firms.
Border surveillance is shifting from manpower to a digital monitoring network, with drones, radars and thermal cameras increasingly used to cover vast areas in real time. Anduril raised $5bn at a $61bn valuation and won a $363m US Border Patrol contract, while Shield AI secured a $198m US Coast Guard contract and has deployed its drones on European borders.
Detention and deportation are also enlarging the industry: ICE has increased detention capacity from roughly 40,000 beds before Trump’s return to office to about 70,000, with a target of 100,000. CoreCivic and Geo Group have benefited, with first-quarter 2026 net profit up 50% year on year for the former and doubled for the latter; ICE set a monthly record of nearly 1,800 deportation flights in March, and GlobalX’s first-quarter sales rose 15% year on year.
