Since February 28, strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran have expanded a campaign projected to last 4 to 5 weeks, and possibly up to 8 weeks, into a regional war. By March 4, deaths inside Iran had exceeded 1,000, while the Israeli Air Force said it had delivered more than 5,000 munitions. Iran then retaliated with hundreds of drones and ballistic missiles aimed at Israel, US embassies, military bases, airports, and ports; although many were intercepted, the attacks still caused casualties, building damage, and a halt to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
More than 12 countries have been directly affected, showing a wide spillover footprint. Israel reported at least 11 deaths and damage to more than 40 buildings in Tel Aviv; the United Arab Emirates said it had intercepted hundreds of attacks, yet debris or direct hits still struck Dubai’s Burj Al Arab, Palm Jumeirah, and two Amazon Web Services facilities. Jordan intercepted dozens of missiles; in Kuwait, 3 US F-15s were even hit by friendly fire during repeated attack waves. Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Cyprus, Iraq, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Turkey also reported strikes on airports, ports, refineries, bases, or territory.
Economic and diplomatic consequences are mounting quickly. QatarEnergy halted liquefied natural gas production on March 2 and expanded the shutdown on March 3 to urea, polymers, methanol, and aluminum; a major Saudi Aramco refinery faced an attempted drone strike; and at least 1 oil tanker off Oman was attacked. The conflict has also triggered large-scale evacuations: Mora Namdar urged Americans to leave, while the US military offered seats on transport planes; more than a dozen countries, including the UK, Ireland, Germany, and Italy, also announced evacuations or repatriation flights.
