NASA’s Psyche probe, launched in October 2023 toward the metal-rich asteroid Psyche, used a Mars flyby to perform instrument calibration. The spacecraft passed within 4,609 kilometers (2,864 miles) of Mars, used the planet’s gravity to gain speed, and activated cameras, magnetometers, and gamma ray and neutron spectrometers to test them against Martian atmosphere and terrain.
During the maneuver, Psyche captured thousands of images of Mars, including rugged surface detail, crater surroundings, and the south polar cap, where water ice is concentrated. According to Jim Bell of Arizona State University, the dataset is valuable for calibrating camera performance and evaluating early image-processing tools before the asteroid phase of the mission.
After the flyby, the probe reportedly reached 1,600 kilometers per hour (994 miles per hour) while shifting its orbit by one degree. Psyche is scheduled to arrive at the asteroid in August 2029, where it will map the body, thought to be the partial core of a planetesimal, to improve understanding of both the asteroid and Earth’s interior.
