Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket exploded during a hot-fire test on Thursday night at Cape Canaveral, Florida, creating a large fireball. The vehicle is 98 meters tall and is among the largest rockets ever built; Jeff Bezos said all personnel were accounted for and that the company is already working to determine the root cause and rebuild what is needed.
The failed vehicle was set to fly its fourth mission, carrying 48 satellites that were expected to join Amazon Leo’s satellite internet network as soon as next week. NASA administrator Jared Isaacman said the anomaly occurred at Launch Complex 36 and that NASA will help investigate the event, assess near-term impacts, and review possible effects on Artemis and Moon Base plans.
This marks another setback for Blue Origin after the April 19 failure on New Glenn’s third flight, when the first stage landed successfully on a floating platform but the upper stage failed to place AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird 7 satellite into a safe orbit. The FAA investigation into that incident was completed on May 22, underscoring the difficulty of developing heavy-lift launch capability.
