The Wall Street Journal
At 10:00 PM GMT+8 on Feb. 1, 2026 in Taipei, Nvidia Corp. CEO Jensen Huang said the proposed “up to $100 billion” investment in OpenAI “was never a commitment,” and that Nvidia would consider funding “one round at a time.” He said OpenAI invited Nvidia to invest up to $100 billion, Nvidia was honored, but it would invest step by step; he also described it as potentially “the largest investment we’ve ever made.”
Under a letter of intent signed in September, Nvidia had said it planned to invest as much as $100 billion in OpenAI to support new data centers and other AI infrastructure, targeting at least 10 gigawatts (10 GW) of power capacity built around Nvidia’s advanced chips to train and deploy AI models; the first 1 gigawatt (1 GW) would be about 10% of a plan of at least 10 GW. The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that the plan announced in September had stalled after some inside Nvidia raised doubts; it said Huang privately stressed the $100 billion agreement was nonbinding, criticized what he described as a lack of discipline in OpenAI’s business approach, and voiced competitive concerns. On Saturday, Huang called the negative framing “nonsense,” said he believes in OpenAI, declined to name an exact amount, and said Nvidia’s contribution to the current round would not come close to $100 billion.
Asked whether the first 1 gigawatt under the joint plan is on schedule, Huang said on Sunday that it is “up to OpenAI,” because it is OpenAI’s infrastructure. Over the past year, Nvidia’s plan to invest in OpenAI, a key buyer of its advanced AI chips, has intensified concerns about “circular deals” in AI: tech firms investing in AI businesses that buy their products may be financially propping up demand, and investor skepticism has been rising. As another example, Nvidia recently announced plans to invest an additional $2 billion in CoreWeave Inc., a cloud computing provider that is also a key customer.
