According to a survey by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), communication, problem-solving, adaptability, and data analysis/interpretation are the top four skills recruiters sought most among 2026 business school graduates. Although training in artificial intelligence (AI) tools currently ranks low in recruitment demand, recruiters generally believe that AI skills will become highly important in five years.
Currently, recruiters rate graduates' preparedness to work with AI tools as low and feel that business schools are not doing a good job of teaching AI skills. In response, recruiting heads at firms like McKinsey point out that because the half-life of technical skills is rapidly shrinking, they value adaptability, the ability to self-teach new tools, and creative data interpretation over specific AI technical training.
The survey also reveals a shift in employers' specific AI demands, with most companies wanting candidates to use AI to automate routine work rather than to devise business strategy, which prevents strategies from becoming identical. Additionally, the survey notes a decline in graduates' perceived "professionalism," which may be linked to Covid-19 lockdowns disrupting social skills development and a new generation placing greater emphasis on work-life boundaries.
