Sydney's beaches will feature daily dawn-to-dusk drone monitoring for sharks starting in July following a series of shark attacks off the Australian coast. The state government will invest A$120 million ($83 million) over the next two years in its shark mitigation strategy, which includes an additional A$34 million allocated specifically for drone surveillance. This extra funding follows a recent incident at Coogee Beach, one of Sydney's most popular beaches, where a woman in her 30s suffered severe arm and leg injuries from a shark attack, alongside other high-profile incidents. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns stated that the measures aim to reduce risk and restore confidence for swimmers at the state's beaches.

Led by Surf Life Saving NSW, the enhanced monitoring will commence on July 1, covering 38 beaches in Sydney from Palm Beach in the north to Cronulla in the south, with regional beaches also receiving support. The government also announced that at least two new artificial intelligence systems will be trialled over the summer to improve shark detection capabilities.
