Peanuts are the core of Senegal's economy and diet, but local farmers are facing a severe threat from aflatoxin produced by a fungus. This toxin not only contaminates crops but also causes a massive number of fatal liver cancer cases in the region, while costing the country hundreds of millions in lost export revenues annually.
To combat this deadly issue, Senegalese plant pathologist Amadou Lamine Senghor spent over a decade developing a natural solution called Aflasafe. By using indigenous benign fungi to outcompete and suppress the growth of toxic strains, this highly effective method has been proven successful and approved by agricultural authorities.
Although liver cancer remains a largely untreatable terminal illness in the area, the Senegalese government and local businesses have begun promoting and subsidizing this protective technology.
