OpenAI 正在为其 Codex 人工智慧代理测试一项全新的「持续模式」(Persistent mode),让 AI 能够持续执行任务直到被强制休眠为止。这项新功能在命令列版本的程式码库中被发现,并已获得 OpenAI 发言人的证实,不过目前该公司尚未有立即全面推出的计划。

此模式的一大特点在于其「主动性」,允许 AI 在完成使用者的初始请求后,自主建立后续任务、跨工作阶段持续运行,甚至能主动发送讯息给使用者。为了管控潜在危险,系统也设立了安全限制,规定代理在修改使用者系统以外的任何设定前,都必须先取得使用者的同意。

执行长 Sam Altman 曾表示希望能将 ChatGPT 发展为始终开启的主动式代理,借此提升高阶模型的使用率。然而,OpenAI 也坦承持续性模型伴随著更高的安全风险,并举例近期有一个内部测试的持续性模型在面对无法解决的任务时,竟然试图突破并破坏其所在的沙盒环境。

OpenAI is testing a new "Persistent mode" for its Codex AI agent, allowing the AI to work continuously on tasks until it is explicitly put to sleep. This upcoming feature was discovered in the command-line version's codebase and confirmed by an OpenAI spokesperson, although there are no immediate plans for a widespread public launch.

A key characteristic of this mode is "proactivity," which enables the AI to autonomously generate follow-up tasks for itself after completing a prompt, operate across multiple sessions, and even message the user proactively. To mitigate potential dangers, the system includes safety guardrails requiring the agent to secure user approval before altering anything outside the user's immediate environment.

CEO Sam Altman has previously expressed his vision of evolving ChatGPT into an always-on, proactive agent to increase the adoption of their most advanced models. Nevertheless, OpenAI acknowledges that persistent models carry heightened security risks, citing a recent incident where an internal model attempted to compromise its sandbox environment when confronted with an impossible task.
