According to a new climate study published in the journal BioScience, Earth's climate condition is serious and deteriorating. Seven of the 16 planetary vital signs tracked by researchers have reached unprecedented extremes, including atmospheric carbon dioxide levels sitting 50 percent above preindustrial levels, Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets shrinking to record lows, and ocean heat soaring to record highs.
Since 2010, the pace of global warming has accelerated to 0.36 degrees Celsius per decade, and a strengthening El Niño could push global average temperatures to new records by the end of the year. Occurring atop an already warmer planet, the additional heat and drought from El Niño pose severe threats to vulnerable ecosystems like coral reefs and tropical forests, potentially triggering mass coral bleaching and compounding the pressures of logging, mining, and drought in the Amazon rainforest, edging it closer to a tipping point where it degrades into savanna.
Although the report notes encouraging growth in carbon-free renewable energy within the power grid—a sign of entering the "Age of Electricity"—annual greenhouse gas emissions remain at record highs. Lead author Bill Ripple emphasizes that the expansion of renewable energy is not yet sufficient to reverse overall climate deterioration, warning that the climate emergency is not a future event, but a reality we are already living through.
