In May, US technology companies announced 38,242 job cuts, the highest since August 2024, as they increased spending on artificial intelligence. So far this year, the tech industry has announced 123,653 cuts, up over 65% from the same period in 2025. Meanwhile, total private-sector job cuts fell 7% over the past five months compared to the prior year, reinforcing a "low-hire, low-fire" environment in most other sectors.
According to Andy Challenger, chief revenue officer of Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc., artificial intelligence is now the primary reason companies give for cutting jobs. This shift aligns with recent high-profile workforce reductions at companies such as Meta Platforms Inc., Intuit Inc., and Cisco Systems Inc. However, despite these white-collar layoffs, filings for unemployment insurance have not meaningfully increased.
While tech firms led in job cuts, they also registered the largest hiring plans of any sector. Across all US sectors, employers planned 80,472 hires so far this year—an improvement over 2024 and 2025 but well below the levels seen from 2019 to 2023. Finally, the government's upcoming monthly report is expected to show US employers added 85,000 jobs in May, completing the strongest three-month stretch of job gains in over a year.
