The global coffee industry, valued at approximately $250bn annually, faces an existential threat from climate change. The market is dominated by two species: arabica, which is highly sensitive to temperatures above 30°C, and robusta. Studies suggest that up to 50% of current global coffee-growing land could become unsuitable for cultivation by 2050. In Brazil, severe drought followed by frost destroyed nearly 600m kilograms of coffee between 2020 and 2021, representing roughly 6% of annual global output. Despite global consumption reaching 2.25bn cups per day, the coffee sector reinvests less than 0.1% of its annual revenues into research and development.
In response to warming trends, Aaron Davis, a botanist at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, is championing the commercialization of climate-resilient wild coffee species. In 2018, Davis rediscovered stenophylla in Sierra Leone, a wild species natively adapted to higher temperatures that possesses a flavor profile comparable to high-grade arabica. Supported by trading firm Sucafina, Davis's team is currently overseeing trial cultivations of 12,000 stenophylla plants across Sierra Leone to evaluate commercial viability in drought-prone regions.
Domesticating wild crops presents substantial economic and biological hurdles. Cultivating wild species into stable agricultural crops with predictable yields requires selective breeding across multiple plant generations over several decades. Furthermore, roughly half of the world's 25 million coffee farmers live on less than $3.20 a day, making crop transitions high-risk. To mitigate these challenges, researchers are also evaluating heat-tolerant wild species such as liberica and its hybrids to provide canopy shade and crop diversification, securing future global coffee supply against escalating climate volatility.
