Despite its widespread adoption, testing by the National Institute of Standards and Technology revealed that Rank One’s algorithm exhibits demographic disparities, with false match rates varying significantly based on sex and country of birth. Error rates are lowest for individuals born in Eastern Europe and higher for women than for men. Following security disclosures, Meta completely removed the dormant code, originally named NameTag, from its application on June 5, 2026.
