Meta has internally tested face-recognition software developed by Rank One Computing, a surveillance technology provider that generates approximately 80 percent of its revenue from government clients, including the US Marshals Service and the Navy. Rank One's technology is notable for its capability to identify faces from up to 1 kilometer (1 kilometer) away and is integrated into tools utilized by numerous police departments. Although the licensed software supports up to 10 million facial templates and contains liveness detection, Meta kept the integration dormant within its companion app for smart glasses, which has been downloaded to over 50 million mobile devices.
Founded in 2015, Rank One went public in February 2026. Its leadership consists of former high-ranking law enforcement and intelligence officials, including B. Scott Swann and other board members from the FBI, CIA, and Pentagon. The firm's biometric identification kits have been used by the US Marshals Service since 2021, and its algorithms are also deployed in West Virginia schools and commercial platforms like DataWorks Plus and LexisNexis's Lumen.
Despite its widespread adoption, testing by the National Institute of Standards and Technology revealed that Rank One’s algorithm exhibits demographic disparities, with false match rates varying significantly based on sex and country of birth. Error rates are lowest for individuals born in Eastern Europe and higher for women than for men. Following security disclosures, Meta completely removed the dormant code, originally named NameTag, from its application on June 5, 2026.
