Amid rising trade tensions between the European Union and China, France and Germany have proposed empowering Brussels with aggressive trade defense tools, including mechanisms to halt imports from targeted countries unless a majority of member states object. However, this radical strategy echoes the protective trade measures adopted by the United States since the first Trump administration, which largely failed to diminish China's trade prowess while inflating household costs and stifling domestic industrial innovation.

A closer examination of manufacturing output and employment data reveals that Europe has actually demonstrated greater industrial resilience than the United States following years of tariffs. Furthermore, while the US export sector accounts for merely 11% of its GDP, allowing it to better absorb the fallout of protectionist failures, the EU depends on exports for 23% of its GDP—a level surpassing even China's 21%—making European industry far more vulnerable to trade disruptions.

The primary risk of the Franco-German initiative lies in overlooking the composition of bilateral trade, as nearly half of Europe's imports from China consist of intermediate goods and vital components utilized in local manufacturing and subsequent exports. Imposing harsh import bans would jeopardize European production lines and severely harm domestic industries rather than Chinese competitors, underscoring that policymakers should avoid repeating Washington's self-inflicted economic mistakes.
