Nvidia is bringing Windows-on-Arm PCs back to the stage at Computex in Taipei, echoing the launch event held roughly 15 years ago at the W Hotel near Taipei 101. Back then, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and Nvidia showed reference designs for a new class of power-efficient mobile computers, but the effort quickly failed because Windows 8 was not touch-friendly enough and software incompatibilities were widespread; Nvidia even named its chip the Kal-El Superchip. Now Jensen Huang is repackaging the idea with the RTX Spark Superchip, trying again to persuade consumers that Arm-based Windows laptops have a future.

Compared with 2011, both Nvidia and Huang are in a radically different position: the company has moved from gaming graphics to a $5 trillion role at the center of the AI revolution. Huang said at Computex that 100% of PC makers are signed up for RTX Spark, and he is set to appear remotely at Microsoft Build with Satya Nadella; former Windows chief Steven Sinofsky also recalled that the first Surface used Nvidia Tegra ARM chips. The piece notes that long-time Windows users want better machines, while the author’s Qualcomm-powered Lenovo laptop has outstanding battery life.

Even so, the main questions about RTX Spark remain endurance and power efficiency: if it delivers Intel-like performance but only Intel-like battery life, it does not really change much. IDC analyst Bryan Ma argues that such machines are unlikely to move shipments much in the near term because they will be premium, expensive devices aimed at enthusiasts and creative professionals, though they could still change how PCs are used and push the weak AI PC narrative in a more aggressive direction. Huang and Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon both say future AI agents need purpose-built hardware, and the article concludes that Arm is already the clearest path to better power efficiency on Windows.
