Beijing has officially banned the possession and use of recreational drones to bolster security in the capital following a serious aviation incident in June, when a two-seat light plane deliberately crashed into the 109-story Citic Tower. The crash, which occurred just several kilometers from China's central leadership headquarters, resulted in the pilot's death and injured thirteen others, triggering Beijing's toughest response to date against security breaches in sensitive airspace.
The new regulations designate all of Beijing as controlled airspace, strictly outlawing recreational flights and barring residents from owning or storing drones and drone parts starting November 15. Owners must relocate equipment outside the city by November 14 or participate in a municipal buyback scheme offering up to 3,000 yuan ($447) per unit, while airspace controls within a 300-kilometer radius are also being reinforced with mandatory backup tracking and continuous two-way communication for operating aircraft.
Unlike cities like Washington or Paris that primarily prohibit drone flights, Beijing distinguishes itself by outright banning the possession and transport of drones by residents and visitors within city limits. Following the announcement and heightened regulatory scrutiny over low-altitude operations, shares of Chinese low-altitude economy and aviation companies declined, including losses recorded by Nanjing LES Information Technology, Zhejiang Wanfeng Auto Wheel, and Citic Offshore Helicopter.
