China has warned that 50 billion dollars (USD 50bn) of investments in Indonesia are at risk due to recent regulatory changes disrupting the nickel industry, where Jakarta controls over two-thirds of the refined global supply. The Chinese embassy stated that a near-200 percent increase in production costs for EV battery-grade nickel threatens the viability of nearly all such projects, potentially affecting 30 billion dollars (USD 30bn) in existing and 20 billion dollars (USD 20bn) in planned investments, while reducing annual exports by approximately 23 billion dollars (USD 23bn) and impacting 400,000 jobs.
This outcry comes as President Prabowo Subianto’s government faces investor backlash over populist welfare policies and resource nationalism, including a new state-owned agency to oversee exports of coal, palm oil, and nickel. Despite foreign direct investment from mainland China and Hong Kong reaching 18.1 billion dollars (USD 18.1bn) last year and 4.9 billion dollars (USD 4.9bn) in the first quarter of 2026, mining quota cuts and arbitrary land confiscations for environmental enforcement have forced several Chinese processing facilities to reduce production.
While the China Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia complained of excessively stringent regulation undermining long-term investment confidence, Indonesian energy minister Bahlil Lahadalia emphasized the nation's need to earn income alongside business survival. Furthermore, finance minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa defended the state's actions by alleging that Chinese companies were involved in unspecified illegal activities, stating that the government would only intervene if laws were violated.
