The financial cost of the first three weeks of war in Iran has reached an extreme level, with more than $11.3 billion spent in just the first six days and the Pentagon then requesting an additional $200 billion from Congress. In the opening week alone, the US fired about 800 interceptor missiles; at roughly $4 million per PAC-3 missile, that component alone cost more than $3 billion. By comparison, Ukraine received about 600 Patriot interceptors over four years of war, showing an unusually high rate of expenditure.

Unit weapon costs and deployment costs magnify the fiscal burden. A complete Patriot system costs about $1 billion, and PAC-3 missiles are single-use items. Beyond missiles, the US deployed two carrier strike groups to the Middle East and conducted hundreds of strikes on targets inside Iran, creating a continuing high-spending structure. War costs have already approached or exceeded the annual budgets of several US federal agencies, including the IRS at $12.3 billion, the FDA at $7.2 billion, and the National Park Service at $3.3 billion.

This fiscal outcome sharply contrasts with Trump’s earlier emphasis on cutting government waste. DOGE officials claimed cumulative savings of about $215 billion through the end of 2025, but by October only about half had been accounted for, and reports found double-counting and theoretical savings treated as actual savings, implying the real total was likely lower. In effect, three weeks of war have rapidly consumed an amount comparable to a major share of a large government-cutting effort, and if the conflict extends, the total bill will keep rising day by day.
