Despite looking like an oversized dolly and moving at only 8 km/h, the Ratel H demonstrates Ukraine’s rapid tactical adaptation as a drone-launching UGV. Ratel Robotics says a model can move from drawing board to front line in six months; in the first three months, Ukrainian drones and robots executed more than 22,000 missions, and on April 13 Ukraine said it captured a Russian position using only UGVs and drones.
The battlefield is showing a measurable shift toward automation: Russia’s average daily advance since the start of the year is under 5.5 square kilometres, about half last year’s pace, while Ukraine expanded drone output from 800,000 three years ago to a planned 7 million this year and claimed a 1.3:1 lead in FPV drones. Ukraine also lengthened fixed-wing drone range to 1,500 km, raised interceptor production to over 1,000 per day, recorded roughly 35,000 Russian casualties in March with 96% attributed to drone strikes, and a single late-April raid killed 18 people.
Ukraine now runs a fragmented innovation base of about 2,300 defense firms that can iterate quickly despite short procurement cycles, delayed payments, and procurement frictions. Yet constraints remain—NABU-linked tenders and inflated contracts persist, Russian ballistic-missile superiority endures, and even with 343 days in trenches commanders still rely on infantry for position holding because UGVs are less suited to forests and bad weather.
