US-based academics Robert E. Hall of Stanford University and Michael Woodford of Columbia University have won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Economics, sharing the 12 million-krona prize for their foundational research on the microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic stabilization.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences highlighted Hall's 1978 paper demonstrating that consumers prefer stable consumption, alongside Woodford's development of the New Keynesian model. Their collective work provides a robust theoretical framework that central banks and governments worldwide rely on to navigate economic shocks such as energy crises and household spending shifts.

Woodford noted that their framework proved vital during the 2008 global financial crisis, particularly through central banks' adoption of forward guidance regarding future interest rate policy to aid stabilization. Additionally, in conjunction with the 125th anniversary of the prizes, the prize money for each category was increased by 1 million kronor this year.
