Bloomberg reported that OpenClaw, an open-source AI agent launched in November and built around large language models including Anthropic PBC’s Claude, has ignited a rally in Chinese technology stocks. After Tencent Holdings introduced WorkBuddy, a workplace AI agent fully compatible with OpenClaw, its shares rose 7.3% on Tuesday in Hong Kong, its best trading day in a year. Knowledge Atlas Technology (Zhipu), which launched AutoClaw, a localized version, jumped 13%, while MiniMax Group rose 22% after launching MaxClaw. MiniMax’s rise has pushed its market value above Baidu’s after only two months of listing.
Shen Meng, a director at Beijing investment bank Chanson & Co., said OpenClaw created major social-media momentum, with firms like Tencent encouraging mass installation. The report says OpenClaw’s user growth has been exponential: in a few months it surpassed Linux on GitHub’s all-time star leaderboard. Tencent’s free OpenClaw rollout on its cloud platform this week generated long queues at its headquarters, and Zhipu responded with a WeChat campaign offering a free AutoClaw trial without queue time. Since its IPO, MiniMax has gained nearly 640%, and its market value is now about US$49 billion.
Local policy support reinforced the momentum: software firms such as UCloud Technology rose around 20% on Monday after a district in Shenzhen encouraged OpenClaw adoption, and Changshu city in Jiangsu announced similar measures. Citigroup called Tencent’s launch of WorkBuddy a potential inflection point for China’s AI-agent market. Tencent stock had previously been pressured by fears of high spending and possible business disruption from AI spread, but the company said on Tuesday afternoon it had started testing QClaw, which will be embedded in the WeChat ecosystem, signaling continued integration pressure across major platforms.
