SoftBank Group Corp. founder Masayoshi Son stated that there is little merit to building data centers in space, explaining that the benefit of cutting electricity costs is outweighed by higher transport and maintenance fees as well as communication delays, predicting that the AI race will be clinched by compute on Earth.
Son pointed out that in the battle for AI, the next few years will be far more important than what might happen a decade or so from now. While calling Musk a remarkable agent of change, he stated that SoftBank will focus on building formidable data center capacity on Earth.
He also acknowledged that AI competition is intensifying, but believed there is more than enough room for growth for OpenAI and its major rivals like Anthropic and Google, as AI is still in its early stages with potential for ten-fold or hundred-fold growth.
