Las Vegas is repositioning as entertainment has become a competitive necessity, illustrated by Circa’s rooftop “outdoor aqua-theatre” with a 140-foot screen showing football and live odds beside bars, a grill, and a poolside casino. Since Nevada’s near-monopoly era has broken up over time—Atlantic City in 1978, 1990s riverboat and tribal expansion, and especially the 2018 Supreme Court ruling—40 states are set to legalize sports betting by year-end and 11 are allowing online slots and table games.

Visitor volume has fallen to 38.5 million in 2025, 10% below the pre-pandemic peak, while a strong dollar and weak Asian recovery have squeezed demand; Canadian arrivals, long the largest foreign segment, are down 25% despite the city matching Canadian dollars one-for-one. The domestic market also softened, budget-oriented travelers are fewer after hidden charges and the Spirit Airlines collapse, and value-sensitive mid- and lower-tier resorts such as Excalibur and Luxor appear noticeably emptier.

Still, legalization has produced a major new demand wedge: about 17% of Americans bet on a sporting event last year, more than double the share two years earlier, and 50% of men under 50 hold online sports-betting accounts. Strip-wide total gambling revenue was flat, yet sports wagering rose about 25%; with DraftKings and FanDuel dominating online, MGM and Caesars now use app-based loyalty and data-driven promotions to fill low-occupancy periods and convert bettors into future visitors, accelerating a long-term shift toward sports as a core city economy pillar.
