SpaceX’s massive Starship rocket achieved a major program milestone on Monday morning by reaching orbit for the first time during its 14th test flight. Launched from the Starbase facility in South Texas, the rocket successfully deployed 26 upgraded V3 Starlink satellites into orbit to integrate with the constellation. Although an early shutdown of one of the six Raptor engines prompted engineers to shorten the planned 10-hour flight, the mission pressed forward into orbit before the vehicle made a controlled ocean dive and splashed down near Hawaii roughly three hours after liftoff.
SpaceX executives designated this mission as a revenue-generating flight, highlighting that the production-grade V3 satellites offer over ten times the capacity of V2 models and are set to rapidly boost Starlink revenues. Starship serves as the cornerstone for SpaceX's ambitious future, tasked not only with lofting thousands of future orbital AI data-center satellites that fueled its blockbuster IPO, but also with enabling crewed missions to the Moon and Mars, which will still require mastering in-orbit refueling and complex development milestones.
A central priority for SpaceX remains achieving full reusability for Starship, having already caught the Super Heavy booster at the launch tower three times and eyeing a first attempt to catch the upper-stage spacecraft on the upcoming 15th flight. While the spacecraft exploded after plunging through the atmosphere into the Pacific to test its heat shield—prompting questions from experts regarding thermal durability for rapid reuse—Elon Musk maintained that the heat shield challenges are resolved, targeting a full reflight of both stages by late this year or early next.
