Martin Wolf

Discussing the UK's prospects of rejoining the EU, Martin Wolf notes that a full reversal of Brexit is unrealistic and unnecessary. Rejoining would trigger a divisive referendum and complex negotiations without previous opt-outs, exhausting parliamentary terms. Yet, the EU remains the UK's primary economic partner, with 45 per cent of UK trade in goods still conducted with the EU in 2025.
Instead of rejoining, Martin Wolf advocates for a "Swiss option" consisting of a patchwork of treaties to align the UK with the EU single market and customs union. This model avoids a referendum but requires accepting the free movement of labor. Demographically, the UK requires continued migration, but former migration triggers, such as the EU eastern enlargement and the Eurozone crisis, are now in the past.
This patchwork would strengthen the UK's most vital relationship, as a post-Brexit return to the old US partnership is unlikely, even after Donald Trump. While a short-term reversal is impossible, step-by-step alignment offers a practical path forward. If successful, this framework could serve as a stronger future platform for rejoining the EU.
