Octopuses possess remarkable intelligence, demonstrating abilities such as unscrewing jars from the inside and throwing sand at annoying neighbors. However, only a small fraction of their smarts originates from their central, doughnut-shaped brains.

In fact, over two-thirds of an octopus's roughly 500 million neurons are distributed across its eight sucker-studded arms. This unique distributed nervous system allows each appendage to move in any direction independently while tasting and feeling with exquisite sensitivity.

A nerve ring connecting all eight arms enables them to explore the seafloor autonomously, without always being governed by the central brain. While many anatomical, behavioral, and philosophical mysteries remain about this distributed intelligence, scientists are continuing to uncover the secrets of these unorthodox invertebrates.
