Since early 2025, an unprecedented baby boom of eight orangutan infants has arrived across American zoos, including Ruhana, who was successfully delivered via C-section at the Memphis Zoo. This surge is not a coincidence but the outcome of meticulous breeding plans by the Orangutan Species Survival Plan (SSP). Since 1985, the SSP has analyzed studbook pedigrees, genetic diversity, and individual behavioral traits to maintain a genetically healthy and sustainable captive safety net for these critically endangered primates.

Sharing over 90 percent of their DNA with humans, orangutans undergo reproductive care similar to humans, such as using human birth control, prenatal vitamins, and pregnancy tests during an approximate nine-month gestation. Zookeepers train mothers to pass infants through enclosures for routine medical assessments and nursing support, and experienced surrogate mothers are prepared to step in when biological bonding fails—as seen at Hogle Zoo, where an experienced foster mother named Acara successfully adopted and nurtured baby Weila.

With wild populations severely threatened by palm oil deforestation and poaching for the illegal pet trade, orangutans face potential extinction in the wild within decades. Although captive-born infants are not destined for release, they serve as vital educational ambassadors against habitat loss. Furthermore, scientific insights gathered from captive apes, such as linking dental milestones to developmental stages, directly aid wildlife rescue and rehabilitation facilities in Southeast Asia to improve the survival chances of wild cousins.
