The US used EV market is surging as budget-conscious consumers flee soaring fuel costs. Used EV sales jumped 17% through the first four months of the year, defying an almost 27% plunge in new EV sales and a 7% slide in overall new-vehicle deliveries. Close to 40% of used battery-powered cars on dealer lots are priced below $25,000, roughly half the average new-car price. The average used EV lists at around $35,000, only about $1,000 more than an equivalent pre-owned gas car, and in the compact SUV segment, the price premium has dropped by 95%, bringing near price parity. On a 72-month loan, the monthly payment difference is a negligible $20.
A massive supply wave is fueling this trend. Approximately 1.2 million EVs are set to come off lease and enter the used market over the next 18 months, many still carrying years of original factory warranty coverage—typically 8 to 10 years or 160,934 km (100,000 miles) for batteries. A legislative loophole caused EV leasing to surge above 75% of all EV transactions, compared to about 20% for gas models, ensuring a flood of late-model, low-mileage vehicles. The selection of used EVs has tripled from fewer than 40 models in 2022 to more than 120 now, spanning trucks, three-row SUVs, and affordable crossovers from GM, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Rivian, and Mercedes-Benz.
Individual cases illustrate this shift. Eric Flickinger, a mechanical engineer near Seattle, hit his breaking point paying $7.39 per gallon ($1.95/liter) for diesel, watching $200 fail to fill his 125-liter (33-gallon) Ram 1500 tank. He purchased a used Ford F-150 Lightning for $44,000—less than half its original sticker—eliminating his fuel costs and car payment simultaneously. Similarly, Heidi Dresbach, 56, acquired a 2024 Cadillac Lyriq with only 4,828 km (3,000 miles) for just over $36,000, down from its $65,000–$75,000 new price, saving significantly on her monthly 1,931-km (1,200-mile) driving routine where fill-ups had reached $65–$70.
