Iran has destroyed more than two dozen MQ-9 Reaper drones operated by US forces since the war began, inflicting losses worth nearly $1 billion and equal to about 20% of the Pentagon’s prewar inventory of the hard-to-replace unmanned system. The Reapers, built by General Atomics and no longer manufactured for US forces, cost about $30 million each, carry advanced sensors and weapons, and have been heavily used to keep air crews out of harm’s way as the US and Israel have struck Iran.

A person with direct knowledge said many Reapers were shot down in flight by Iranian fire, while others were destroyed on the ground in missile attacks or lost in accidents. US forces have lost at least 24 Reapers and possibly as many as 30, including aircraft later written off after damage. That figure exceeds an earlier Congressional Research Service estimate that 24 had been lost. The campaign began with US and Israeli strikes on Feb. 28, and an uneasy ceasefire has held since April 8 despite occasional strikes.

The losses underscore how expensive distance warfare remains even with uncrewed systems, especially because there is no active US production line for Reapers and only about 10 jet-powered Avenger follow-on drones were built. Bloomberg Economics defense lead Becca Wasser said MQ-9s may be attritable, but they are too costly and too few to be treated as expendable. Beyond the drones, the US has lost two crewed aircraft over Iran, including an F-15E Strike Eagle and an A-10 Thunderbolt II, and other losses include an E-3, KC-135 tankers, three other F-15s, two MC-130J aircraft, and damaged radar systems worth hundreds of millions of dollars each, adding billions more in replacement costs.
