Apple is preparing a wave of AI features for iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, including a grammar checker, systemwide shortcuts created with natural language, and custom wallpaper generation. The updates are set to be unveiled at WWDC in June and released to the public in September, underscoring Apple’s push to catch up with consumer AI features already ahead at Samsung Electronics Co. and Alphabet Inc.’s Google.
In writing tools, Apple plans a Grammarly-like grammar checker that appears in a translucent menu sliding up from the bottom of the screen and shows original text beside suggested revisions. Users will be able to accept suggestions one by one, approve all changes, or ignore them, and can also pause checking and move between flagged passages. The feature extends Writing Tools introduced in 2024, which already include proofreading and summarization. Apple is also testing a “Write With Siri” toggle at the top of the keyboard and a “Help Me Write” option when Siri is activated in a text field.
Shortcuts is also due for an upgrade: the version in testing lets users create a shortcut simply by describing what they want it to do, instead of manually building it or downloading one from Apple’s gallery. Apple is additionally preparing AI wallpaper creation through the Image Playground app for custom lock screen and home screen backgrounds. Meanwhile, Google has added AI widgets, a “Rambler” dictation mode, and tools that can sync tasks across apps in Android 17 and Gemini Intelligence, widening the competitive gap.
