OpenAI is partnering with Plaid Inc. to let ChatGPT deliver personalized financial advice using data consumers choose to share from linked accounts. Until now, ChatGPT could only offer generic guidance, but Plaid's data feeds could let it tailor suggestions to a user's actual finances, such as identifying which credit card to pay off first and how much. OpenAI said ChatGPT is not a replacement for professional financial advice, while Plaid CEO Zach Perret said the aim is to improve financial freedom, understanding of products, and trust in the financial system.
The move comes as consumer demand for AI financial guidance grows. OpenAI said more than 200 million users have used ChatGPT for budgeting, investment questions, and other finance-related topics. Plaid's reach matters because the majority of US consumers have linked a bank account to a fintech through Plaid, giving OpenAI potential access to broad account-level data. Meanwhile, traditional advisers and firms such as Charles Schwab Corp. are also adopting AI, and Anthropic PBC is targeting financial services with new agents.
The current version is read-only, so consumers still must move money or take other actions themselves, according to OpenAI product lead Ty Geri. Important gaps remain, including assets that do not appear in linked accounts, such as home equity. Perret said the rollout is only an initial step and expects the product to evolve over 1, 2, or 3 years as OpenAI and the broader industry add more breadth and quality to financial experiences. The partnership signals a larger shift toward AI-assisted finance, but it also highlights limits around completeness, execution, and the need for human oversight.
