According to the latest data from IDC, Huawei and Apple consolidated their leading positions in the Chinese smartphone market during the June quarter. While the overall Chinese mobile market experienced a 4.3% decline in shipments, these two brands, which dominate the premium segment, both saw significant shipment growth of roughly 20% compared to the same period last year, making them the only major vendors to record growth.

A key factor driving this market polarization is the surging component costs caused by a memory chip supply crunch. An IDC analyst pointed out that memory costs have jumped nearly 300% year-over-year and now account for over 65% of the bill of materials for low-end devices, forcing Android vendors to raise their prices. This has not only cut into sales in the budget segment but also prompted consumers to either purchase premium devices in anticipation of further price hikes or skip upgrading altogether.

The global market demonstrated a similar pattern. Amid an overall 6.7% decline in global smartphone shipments, Samsung and Apple emerged as the exceptions. Apple's ability to achieve double-digit growth both globally and in China highlights its strong brand presence and excellent supply-chain execution, while the looming prospect of price increases likely also served to accelerate consumer demand.
