For 80 million years prior to human arrival, New Zealand was a unique landmass devoid of terrestrial mammals, allowing its native birds to evolve without ground predators, lose the ability to fly, and fill ecological niches—such as the takahē and the kiwi. However, human settlement and the introduction of mammalian predators like rats, stoats, possums, and feral cats drastically transformed the ecology, driving roughly 40% of endemic bird species to extinction within 700 years.

Confronting this severe extinction crisis, New Zealand has mounted an extraordinary conservation effort over the past half-century, utilizing a "conservation introduction" strategy that controls invasive predators and relocates endangered birds to safe offshore islands or fenced mainland sanctuaries. Evolutionary biology professor Carl Bergstrom recalls his first visit to New Zealand at age 10 when seeing a wild takahē was virtually impossible, whereas on his recent trip to Rakiura and a sanctuary in the heart of Wellington, he not only encountered a wild kiwi at night but also came face-to-face with a family of takahē, witnessing the remarkable success of species recovery.

Although certain pelagic birds and native penguins remain gravely threatened by climate change and overfishing, kiwi restoration initiatives offer inspiring hope. Because kiwi evolved a "slow life-history strategy" characterized by a long lifespan and low reproductive rate, chicks are highly vulnerable to stoats until they reach a "stoat-proof weight" of about 1.2 kilograms, at which point they can defend themselves with their powerful legs. Through the Capital Kiwi Project in the hills around Wellington, grazing pastures rich in invertebrates combined with gorse cover create a super-habitat that enabled a four-month-old chick to rapidly reach this milestone weight and be released into the wild, where it can thrive for the next 50 years.
