China's goods exports hit a record $412 billion in June 2026, surging 27% year-on-year in the strongest performance in four months, while imports jumped 36% at the fastest pace in five years. The trade surplus ballooned to $125.6 billion, a level exceeded only once before in history. The global AI investment supercycle was the primary catalyst, with semiconductor exports soaring 122% in dollar terms, though volumes actually fell 0.4%, revealing significant price distortion in the trade figures.

Export growth is broadening well beyond AI-related goods. China exported over one million vehicles in a single month for the first time, with values up 70% year-on-year, while ship exports rose 42% and home appliances climbed 15%. Chinese EVs captured more than 15% of the European market for the first time. However, the widening trade surplus with the EU—reaching a record $32.9 billion in June—and with Germany has intensified political friction, with European leaders and the G7 pledging supply chain diversification away from China.

Despite robust trade performance, China's economy faces significant headwinds. Weak domestic spending risks deepening structural imbalances, and second-quarter GDP growth likely approached the lower bound of the official 4.5%–5% target. Crude oil imports plunged 41% to the lowest level since 2016 amid Middle East tensions. Rising trade barriers, inflationary pressures, and geopolitical conflicts cloud the outlook for the second half, while AI adoption is placing additional strain on an already fragile labor market. Analysts nonetheless expect the global AI supercycle and easing US-China trade tensions to sustain export momentum.
