California has declared a state of emergency as a strengthening El Niño in the Pacific Ocean increases the threat of destructive storms, widespread flooding, and mudslides throughout the upcoming fall and winter. Governor Gavin Newsom announced the proclamation on Monday to mobilize state resources early.

In preparation for the impending weather risks, the governor directed state agencies to inspect critical infrastructure such as drainage systems and accelerate flood-mitigation projects designed to protect highways and bridges from coastal erosion. El Niño, driven by equatorial Pacific warming, has historically brought exceptionally wet winters with heavy rainfall and mountain snow to California.

Although the most severe storms are expected weeks away, officials across California have already initiated flood-defense measures, including constructing coastal barriers and distributing sandbags to the public to safeguard homes and commercial businesses.
