(關鍵數字: a year)

Apple has launched a new legal challenge at the Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT) against the UK government's latest attempt to mandate a "backdoor" for accessing users' encrypted cloud backup data. This follows the Home Office's withdrawal of a previous order a year ago after a dispute with Washington, subsequently issuing a new "technical capability notice" (TCN) exclusively applying to British users.

Issued under the UK Investigatory Powers Act, these TCNs aim to compel companies to provide security services with access to customer data, even when safeguarded by secure encryption. Privacy International and Liberty have previously filed complaints against TCNs, and a case management hearing is scheduled for next month to determine how these parallel legal challenges will be addressed.

Apple has consistently maintained that creating any such backdoor would compromise the security of its systems for all customers. Following the receipt of the initial TCN in January 2025, Apple revoked UK customers' access to its iCloud Advanced Data Protection (ADP) system. The UK government counters that law enforcement access to communications is vital and proportionate for protecting the public from serious crimes.
